AI governance after launch: how to keep accountability working
An AI policy can look complete while daily practice remains weak. Real governance means people know who owns each system, what evidence must be kept and what happens when risk changes. ## Build accountability into the work Start with an AI register. Record the purpose, model, provider, data, users, risk level and accountable manager. Add the last review date and the event that must trigger a new review. Create three clear roles. The business owner is responsible for the result. Technical staff test the system and monitor changes. Risk, legal or subject experts challenge high-impact uses. A committee can coordinate these roles, but it cannot replace ownership. > **Build practical AI skills.** [Join the AI Excellence Hub](https://aiex.applesandpears.biz/#pricing) for short, work-focused courses. Check whether staff really follow the human-review step. A signed policy is weak evidence if nobody can show the test results. Use a simple monthly or quarterly review. Ask what changed, what failed, who was affected and whether the benefit still justifies the cost and risk. ## Decide what happens next Every review should end with one decision: continue, revise, limit, pause or retire. Set a named owner and date for the action. Escalate serious harm or legal risk at once. ## Your next step Choose one live AI system and add its owner, evidence, review date and stop rule to your register.
